ABOUT ARIJIT SINGH

Arijit Singh is India’s most popular playback singer of Bollywood songs. A trained musician with a fresh voice, Arijit burst upon the music scene with his song Tum Hi Ho from Aashique 2 (2013) and became the heartthrob of the nation and a house hold name in India.

 

He was born on 25th April, 1988 in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, India. His father is a Punjabi while his mother is a Bengali. He initiated training in music under his mother, who herself is a singer in a family steeped in music with his grandmother and aunt trained in Hindustani classical music.

 

Arijit schooled in Raja Bijay Singh High School and Sripat Singh College and training professionally in music under Rajendra Prasad Hazari, Dhirendra Prasad Hazari, and Birendra Prasad Hazari, who taught him Indian Classical music, Western music, Rabindra Sangeet and the tabla.

 

In 2005, Singh auditioned for the reality show Fame Gurukul. Though Singh lost the show to the finals, he entered another reality show, 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, which is a musical face-off between the winners of Fame Gurukul and Indian Idol. After winning the show, Singh built a recording setup of his own, beginning his journey with music programming. Subsequently, he went to become as an assistant music programmer to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar and Mithoon Sharma.

 

In 2010, Arijit started working with Bollywood music director Pritam Chakraborty and started singing scratches for his film music composition. 

In 2009, Arijit made his Bollywood music debut for Mithoon’s music with "Phir Mohabbat" from Murder 2, which was released in 2011.  The same year, he for Pritam’s Agent Vinod (2012), Players, Cocktail and Barfi! He also lent his voice for Chirantan Bhatt in 1920: Evil Returns and for Vishal-Shekhar in Shanghai, where the song "Duaa" from the latter won him Mirchi Music Award for “Upcoming Male Playback Singer” award and was nominated in the same category for "Phir Le Aya Dil" from Barfi!

 

In 2013, "Tum Hi Ho" from Aashiqui 2 (2013) fetched him several awards and nominations including Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. He worked with Jeet Ganguli for the rest of his tracks in the album and many film songs in Kolkata in his mother tongue – Bengali. He further allied with Pritam, singing "Dilliwaali Girlfriend", "Kabira" and "Ilahi" for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani including "Kabira", and "Balam Pichkari." Then came "Main Rang Sharbaton Ka" from Phata Poster Nikhla Hero and "Dhokha Dhadi" from R... Rajkumar, "Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari" from Chennai Express, "Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse" from Jackpot, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s "Laal Ishq" from Ram-Leela and "Tose Naina" from Mickey Virus. And as they say, the rest is history…

 

Today, Arijit is the most favorite voice in Bollywood having sung for all major music directors – from Arko Pravo Mukherjee to AR Rahman. Arijit is known for his great versatility for bringing to life soulful, romantic tracks as well as energetic dance numbers and zesty renditions on one hand and semi-classical Sufi and Ghazals on the other. No one in recent times has seen such a "spell of success" with every second song on Hindi FM radio playlist is Arijit's and Forbes India magazine declaring him 34th on its 2014 celebrity 100 list. His list of awards is growing by the day with honors including a Filmfare Award, an IIFA Award, a Zee Cine Award, Radio Mirchi Award, two Screen Awards, and Youth the Icon – Music Award (UK) to name a few.
